Vote For Johann Marsland

My Bio

I first moved to Kasson in 1997, back when we had just one gas station, and I’ve watched our community grow into a bustling regional hub. Since making Kasson my permanent home in 2010, I’ve served here as a business owner, pastor, and school administrator. My faith calls me to serve all people, and I truly believe a councilman should have no enemies. Drawing on my past experience on a city council, on a fire department, and in property management—as well as my regular attendance at our council meetings to offer prayer support—I am ready to serve. I’m running to help Kasson navigate the challenges of the digital age and build a firm foundation where our community can truly thrive.

My Key Issues

Improved relationship between government and citizenry

I will advocate for improved communication between city administration and the citizens of the community by suggesting standards for notifications and timely interactions on issues that concern the community.

Compassionate equity in city assessments

Right now, our city's assessment system is placing an unfair burden on the families who can least afford it. When a large assessment comes down, those who cannot pay upfront are forced to pay over time with interest. That means our poorest households end up paying 30% to 80% more than neighbors who can afford to pay outright. That simply isn't fair, and we can do better. I am committed to bringing compassionate equity to our city assessments. I will work to seriously curtail these financing costs and introduce a finance charge waiver, ensuring our less advantaged neighbors only have to pay a small, reasonable fee for the financed option. Let's make our city work for everyone.

Personal Communications before official letters and notices

If elected, I am committed to improving our community relationships by bringing a personal touch back to local government. I want to promote a simple but impactful policy: personal communications before official letters and notices. When everyday issues like code violations or unpaid bills arise, I believe citizens shouldn't just receive an impersonal letter in the mail. Instead, city staff would reach out with a friendly courtesy call to try to resolve the issue directly. This small step creates an important layer of connection between our government and the citizenry. By simply talking to one another first, we can work together to solve problems and build a stronger, more supportive community.

Limitting city government costs

Every year, we see our city budgets grow, but our incomes simply aren't keeping pace. When the cost of living rises faster than what families are actually bringing home, we have to make a change. That is why I will strongly advocate for freezing our city budgets, ensuring we do not burden you with additional taxes. To keep our community thriving without raising your costs, I want to promote public-private partnerships to develop and improve our vital city services. By teaming up with local community groups and individuals, we can upgrade our libraries, sports facilities, and parks. This collaborative approach ensures that those who use and benefit from these improvements help fund them, easing the financial burden on neighbors who do not. Together, we can build a stronger, more affordable city.
